Sol has always known she has little in common with the woman she hires to clean her apartment. Sol is progressive - a feminist - and she would never dream of treating the housekeepers as cruelly as her grandmother, or as dismissively as her mother. But all the same; Sol doesn't relate to these women, and she doesn't like the conflicted feelings they bring up in her.
So when Sol and her boyfriend find out they are expecting a baby, having one more cleaner to help around the house seems to make sense. But it isn't long before Sol starts to find their presence - and her own privilege - uncomfortable. Caught between needing the cleaners' help and wishing they didn't exist, Sol feels compelled to chase a respectable, creative career; the kind her family have always thought her deserving of.
But secretly, what Sol really thrives at is cleaning. And what she doesn't want everyone to know is: she has started to clean other people's houses herself . . .
Told in an unfiltered, hypnotic voice, Clean Houses is a sharply funny and uproarious take on privilege, class and the hypocrisies of modern domestic labour.
